Double Cleansing: What Is It and Should You Be Doing It?

“Double Cleansing”... the latest buzz worthy beauty trend in the industry. What the heck is it, and should you be doing it? Read on, dolls. We’ve got the need-to-know info for you.

TBH, when we hear “double cleansing,” we really just think “what, wash my face twice?” Hmm… seems like a great way to ensure that my skin is squeaky clean, but also completely dried out! *Cue the over-production of oil… & blemishes*

Because this sounded so completely ridiculous, we had to dig in and roll up our sleeves. We put our researcher hats on and got to the bottom of what the heck this trending topic was, and whether or not it’s something we could stand behind. Turns out, there’s a little more method behind the madness than our uninformed instincts initially led us to believe.

There is absolutely no arguing this fact: the Koreans have it going on when it comes to skincare. Seriously, they have been graced with the very definition of “porcelain skin” and we swear, aging is not really a thing for them. Double cleansing has been the cornerstone of the Korean method — it is the simplest change to make in your skincare regimen and arguably one of the most important if you experience a litany of skincare issues. Could the double cleanse really be the Korean’s fountain of youth?

What is “Double Cleansing?”

Double cleansing actually means using two different types of cleanser to properly remove impurities and effectively cleanse your skin. By doing this, you can remove more of the pore clogging and irritating environmental agents that lend themselves to breakouts and loss of elasticity.

Why “Double Cleanse?”

A quick go with a face wipe will do nothing to properly dislodge foundation and pollution particles, and if all of that is left on your skin overnight, you aren't giving your skin cells the best chance at regenerating which means no plump, youthful complexion for you. (The lazy girl inside of us all is groaning right now…)

This we know from our high school science classes: water and oil don’t mix. Sebum, the “bad oil” that our skin produces naturally, essentially acts as glue within our pores. Sebum attaches to dead skin cells and other impurities and holds them deep in our skin, resulting in — get ready for it: a big fresh blemish. Yuck.

By using an oil-based cleanser as the first step of your morning and evening skincare routine, you more effectively lift away sebum and other oil-based impurities that a water-based cleanser cannot attach to — such as makeup and SPF.

Following the oil cleanse with a water-based (or glycerin-based) cleanser allows the surfactants (cleansing agents) in this type of cleanser to more effectively penetrate the layers of skin, since you have cleared away the oil barrier that otherwise would prevent this from happening. Water-based impurities, such as sweat and environmental pollutants, can then be properly removed.

Hmm… sounds like we’ve gone back to basics here, and really focused on the perfecting the very foundation of good skin: cleansing it. Makes complete sense, we like it.
