Everything You Need To Know About Getting (& Keeping!) The Perfect Spray Tan

Spring has sprung (depending on what part of the country you live in...), & if you’ve been keeping up with Coachella at all, the fashion trends for Spring include a lot of skin showing. Public Service Announcement: It’s time to tan-up, Dolls! Read on for everything you need to know about having beautifully bronzed skin... the healthy way.

First Things First: Don’t Skip The SPF!

That glow though...There are lots of scary words out there: “cancer,” “wrinkles,” & “sun spots” are just a few. We aren’t arguing the fact that bronzed skin is just flat out beautiful, we’re just advocating for getting your tan on the healthy way. We tapped the Dolls over at Sol Sisters Sunless Tan, co-owners, girlbosses, & besties Tiffany Lipp & Amber Dunlap, on the shoulder for this one... because, we’ve all seen that girl with the oompa-loompa orange skin & it’s just not a good look. Best to leave this artform to the professionals!

The Most Frequently Asked Question About Spray Tans:

Is it safe?Totally, 100%! Your skin naturally sheds the outermost layer about every 7 days & spray tan solution only penetrates that top layer, which is why your spray tans last about a week. It’s safe to say that most reputable spray tanners are choosing products with purest and most natural ingredient list possible. However, the biggest lie in the tanning industry right now is the use of the term "organic". The USDA is only agency in the USA that certifies products organic, the problem is that it only applies to agricultural products. The DHA, colorants, & fragrances used in sunless tanning are not agricultural products. Anyone who currently claims to have "certified" organic DHA or a 100% organic tanning solution is either being mislead themselves or is misleading you. Ask for their certification information, the label of organic products must state the certifier.

 

How to Prep Your Skin for Your Spray Tan:

 

●  If you are tanning for an event we recommend tanning 2 days before.

●   Shower the night before your appointment. Shave & exfoliate to reveal that fresh

  • layer.

  •   Do not apply any lotion, make up or perfume to skin. You do not want anything to

  • create a barrier between the solution and your skin.

    What You Need To Know For Your Appointment:

  •   Bring dark, loose clothing for after your appointment!Wearing tight clothing immediately after you can cause tan lines in unwanted place. Expert tip: go braless.

  •  Wear whatever you are comfortable in.It’s pretty typical for people to go nude or to wear a thong, “we swear... we’re so focused on turning you into our walking advertisement, we aren’t critiquing the effectiveness of your gym routine!”

  • The color that your skin appears immediately after you are sprayed is NOT the color of your tan.Tanning solutions have cosmetic bronzers in them, basically makeup that will be washed off. Some people look awesome in bronzer, some people don’t like it. Either way, know that it’s temporary.

  •   You will typically need to leave the solution on your skin for 8 hours,although some tanners do carry solutions that develop faster. Be sure to ask what is recommended with your solution.

    After your appointment:

  •   Heads Up!: Your first shower it will look like you tan is going down the drain.This is just those cosmetic bronzers, don’t panic. You will be left with your actual tan afterwards.

  •  If you use a traditional solution & shower after 8 hours, you have developed about 80%; You will continue to tan get ever so slightly over the subsequent 8 hours.

  •  If you use a rapid solution & shower after 4 hours, it will look like you barely have a tan. Rapid solutions develop in the same time frame as a traditional solution, they just allow you to shower sooner.

  •  It is recommended that you do not use soap your first shower after receiving your spray tan. After your first showering soap is fine. Do not use harsh bar soaps as they could prematurely strip your tan.

  •   It is important to keep you skin as moisturized as possible after your first shower.The goal is to keep that outer layer as healthy & as intact as possible. Lotion is our friend, friend!

  •   Do not use any products with mineral oil or petroleum:These will strip your color. Make sure to read the ingredients.

  •   In 7-10 days, when you tan starts to fade, you can go ahead & start the process over.For best results, scrub-a-dub-dub to exfoliate off your previous tan before getting a new one.

    “Will I Look Orange?! I Don’t Look Good In Orange!”

    We hope not! Orange tans happen for a few reasons:

● Cheap solution.If you pay $5 for your spray tan, the solution being used is probably not a very high quality solution. Lower quality solutions have bare bones ingredients that give one kind of tan. It is generally very warm tones &, while it works for some people, may looks strange on others.

  •  Trying to extend your tan with drugstore self-tanning lotion.Same problem as above. Just don’t do it, Dolls!

  • Lack of spray tan solution options for different options skin tones.An olive skinned women with dark hair & a very fair redhead probably do notwant to use the same solutions. Ask about “custom color” when booking your spray tan. A great tanner will look at your natural skin tone, ask about your reason for tanning & what your personal preferences are, to determine what the best solution is for you. “We offer over 20 solutions that in addition to the DHA found in all spray tans solutions also have other added ingredients & colors to counteract existing problems.” says Amber. “Put simply we use the color wheel to help you get your best tan. If you have red undertones in you skin, spraying you with a green based solution will help cancel out some of that red. If you have a cool toned complexion & find that previous spray tans have warmed up your skin too much (the dreaded orange!), a violet based solution would be a great choice. We can even mix solutions to meet your needs! For example, mixing a brown base & a red base makes a beautiful deep, earthy tan.
