Everything You Need To Know About The Charcoal Trend, Part Two: Toothpaste

Part two of a three-part series on the charcoal trend. Last week, we talked about drinking charcoal as a cleanse… this week, cleaning your teeth with the black stuff. Read on to learn if this is a DO or a DON’T.

As we discussed in Part One of this series, activated charcoal is essentially a form of carbon that’s been treated to make the surface of its particles porous. All of those little nooks and crannies act like magnets for other particles, which it absorbs and then sweeps away when the charcoal is washed off. So, when you take this simple explanation and apply it to toothpaste… it just makes sense, right? In theory, it binds to everything in its path—stains, tartar, bacteria, viruses… Sounds like the perfect toothpaste has finally been created.

But not so fast. Not everyone is a big fan of this trend, primarily dentists and hygienists. “Will charcoal remove the stains on your teeth? Sure. By removing the enamel on your teeth with them. And enamel cannot be replaced. Bleach opens your enamel, which is why your teeth can get sensitive in traditional whitening processes. But it’s a much safer option than this new charcoal obsession,” says Dr. Bailey E. Hammerberg, DDS of Premier Dental.  

“Charcoal is gritty. I’d be concerned about the abrasiveness of charcoal on your teeth. Instead, I’d recommend a really good spray tan to make your smile look brighter!” says Tiffany Lipp, a dental hygienist and co-owner of Sol Sisters Sunless Tan.

We don’t know about you… but smiling is our favorite, and it sounds like the jury is still out on whether or not charcoal toothpaste is all it’s cracked up to be.
